[Solution] Windows 7 Partition: There are no free MBR slots on the disk

Here is the solution to “There are no free MBR slots on the disk” error while creating new partition on Windows 7.

Scenario:

I am using Windows 7 OS in my HP Pavilion Laptop. I have 3 drives (C, D, and E). When I see through Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management, I could see another drive called ‘System’. So, altogether there are 4 drives of my hard disk.

Problem:

I want one another drive/partition. I installed a Partition software and tried to create a new partition. But I am unable to create new partition. I get the following error message:-

There are no free MBR slots on the disk

Cause:

There is some limitation on disk type in Windows. You can only create 4 primary partitions at most. And, all my 4 partitions were of type ‘Primary’. Therefore, I was not able to create new partition any more.

Solution:

Changing any one partition’s type to Logical from Primary will solve the problem. With partition editor software, you can change partition type between Logical and Primay without losing data.

I have used this FREE partition software: Download Partition Wizard

Here is the video about converting Primary partition to Logical partition:

How to convert Primary partition to Logical partition without losing data?

Thanks.
