Magento 2: Upgrade via Composer (Command Line)

This article shows how you can upgrade/update Magento 2 to any particular version using composer and command line.

First of all, you have to open terminal/command prompt.

Then, go to your Magento site’s root directory in the terminal using cd command. For example, if you are using Ubuntu Linux Operating System then your Magento site can be in folder/directory path as: /var/www/html/ or /var/www/html/magento.

After that, check your current Magento version with the following command:

Running the above command will output something like this:

Magento CLI version 2.0.5

The above output shows that your current Magento version is 2.0.5. Let’s suppose, you want to upgrade your Magento site to version 2.1.6.

For that, you have to run the following commands:

Note that, you have to be in your Magento’s directory root while running the below commands.

After the upgrade, again check your Magento version with the following command:

This should now output showing your Magento version as 2.1.6.

Magento CLI version 2.1.6

Hope this helps. Thanks.
