Hardware Interrupt

6 September 2007 39 views One Comment Popularity: 1% Share/Bookmark

Problem:

Platform: Windows

Computer slows down showing hardware interrupt to 80% and even more. If no application is run, it is still around 40% and when any application is run, say media-player is run, then the hardware interrupt rises to 80% and even more. Computer starts slowly and the sound appears to be so unclear. “Sound” means, when we play some songs or the computer startup sound.

[PS: Hardware interrupts is shown by the application called “Process Explorer i.e. procexp.exe”. You can download it from Sysinternals (www.sysinternals.com)]

Cause:

High hardware interrupt is related to the transfer mode for the primary IDE channel properties of your computer when it’s changed to “PIO only” instead of “DMA if available”. Due to some errors in your XP system, the transfer mode is changed to “PIO only” in place of “DMA if available”.

Solution:

Reset the transfer mode to “DMA if available”.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

1) right click your “My Computer” icon of desktop

2) select “Manage”

3) then “Computer Management” windows opens

Computer Management

I am sure that the above image is not clear to you. It’s the picture of how “Computer Management” window looks. Just click on it and see the full-sized image.

4) Click on the “Device Manager” present in the left list

5) Click the “IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers” of the right list. After you click it, it will expand. Then double click “Primary IDE Channel”.

6) Primary IDE Channel Properties window will appear. Select the “Advanced Settings” of that window.

7) You will see the “Transfer Mode” to be “PIO only”. Actually it should be “DMA if available”.

8 ) Click the driver tab. Then click the uninstall button. Click OK when widows asks for confirmation.

9) Restart your computer.

10) After your restart your computer, windows will automatically install the driver.

11) Again restart the computer once. And you are done.

12) Hurray! Your computer is now working properly without any hardware interrupts.

Cheers,

Mukesh
