Scenario:

I am getting this warning message in my wordpress blog:-

open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/tmp) is not within the allowed path(s)

Solution:

You should check the Uploading Files path settings in your wordpress admin.

- Go to Settings -> Media
- Under ‘Uploading Files‘, see the path for ‘Store uploads in this folder‘
- The default value is ‘wp-content/uploads‘

If you have custom folder then you can specify it here. Otherwise, keeping the default would fix the warning message.

Hope it helps. Thanks.

Scenario / Problem

I am using Contact Form 7 plugin on my WordPress blog.

The form is displayed properly. But, when I submit the form, the spinning arrow is displayed forever and no success or error message is displayed. However, the form is working. It is submitted and I get the message in my inbox.

The main problem is:

- success or error message is not displayed
- spinning arrows displays forever
- this shows, as if the form is not working

Quick Fix / Solution

I googled and found the following suggestions/solutions:-

1. The <a href="http://contactform7.com/faq/#The_spinning_arrow_icon_shows_up_once_I_submit_a_form"target="_blank" rel="nofollow" >official website of contact form 7 says that this may occur due to a conflict between plugins/theme. It suggests to deactivate all other plugins and switch to the default theme.

Their solution might be a good and reliable one but it takes lot of time to figure out which plugin or theme did create such problem. I did not follow their suggestion.

2. The other solution I found was changing a configuration setting in the contact form plugin’s file.

Open file:
/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/wp-contact-form-7.php

Change this:
define( ‘WPCF7_LOAD_JS’, true);

To this:
define( ‘WPCF7_LOAD_JS’, false );

This one is a quick fix. But, when you apply this fix, your form will not be submitted through Ajax. Instead, your contact form page will be reloaded when you submit the form. I did try this solution and it worked for me. However, I did not use this because I want my contact form to be submitted through Ajax.

3. This final solution was what I wanted. This simple trick will let your contact form work as before.

Add file upload field in your contact form. You can go to the contact form plugin settings in admin and add a file upload field in your contact form. If you don’t want to display the file upload field in your form then you can simply make it hidden. Like this:-

[file file-upload]

Here, file-upload is the name of the file upload field.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Scenario:-

My archive link is not working in my WordPress blog. Precisely saying, the date-based archive is not working. I am redirected to 404 page when I try to access Yearly Archive or Monthly Archive.

Cause & Solution:-

The main cause for this problem (in my case) was “Robots Meta Plugin“.

This plugin makes it easy to add the appropriate meta robots tags to pages, disable unused archives, nofollow unnecessary links as well.

More about this plugin:- http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/robots-meta/

I had installed “Robots Meta” Plugin in my WordPress blog and I had checked “Disable the date-based archives” from its configuration settings. I unchecked “Disable the date-based archives” and my problem is solved. Now, the date-based archive links are working fine.

- Login to WordPress admin
- Search for “Robots Meta”. Probably, it is under Plugins or Settings Menu.
- Click the “Robots Meta” link
- You will not be at “Robots Meta Configuration” page
- Under “Archive settings”, uncheck “Disable the date-based archives” checkbox
- Save Settings

You are done. Now, your site’s archive links should start working.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Scenario:

- I have installed WordPress MU in localhost (local computer).
- I am using Windows XP Operating System.
- I am using WAMP Server.

Problem:

When installing WordPress MU, I was getting the following error:-

Warning! Installing to http://localhost/ is not supported. Please use http://localhost.localdomain/ instead.

I was able to get rid of this warning message by commenting the following line (present at around Line 8 to 10) in index-install.php file present inside the wordpress-mu folder:-

if( $_SERVER[ 'HTTP_HOST' ] == 'localhost' ) {
	die( "
Warning!

Installing to http://localhost/ is not supported. Please use http://localhost.localdomain/ instead.
" );
}

By doing this, I was able to install wordpress MU completely in localhost.

But, now I get a strange error. When I try to login to admin panel, I always get redirected back to the login page. I cannot access the dashboard.

Solution:

- Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
- Open the file named hosts in notepad
- At the end of the file, write the following:-
127.0.0.1    localhost.localdomain

- Reinstall WordPress MU using localhost.localdomain instead of localhost.

Suppose you have wordpress MU files in a directory named wordpress-mu. Then, you should type the following URL in the browser:-

http://localhost.localdomain/wordpress-mu/

Hope this helps and thanks for reading.

Generally the wordpress 404 page contains one or two sentence saying that the page is not found. But you can make it more user friendly. Instead of just writing plain text about page not found, we can display archive list and a search form. In this way, the visitor can search or browse your website instantly. This is a nice way to keep your visitors within your site.

I got this idea from wp-comfy theme.

Copy the following code into 404.php of your theme. With this change, you will be able to see search form and archive list in 404 page of your site.

<?php get_header(); ?>

Cannot find the page you're trying to reach..

Use the search form below to find your article or post or browse our latest articles to read something more interesting.

			<form class="find" method="get" action="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/">

					<input size="40" type="text" value="<?php the_search_query(); ?>" name="s" class="findfield" />

Yearly Archive

<?php wp_get_archives('type=yearly&show_post_count=1'); ?>

Twitter, Facebook and wordpress are all popular and fascinating. You publish an article in your wordpress blog. And you may want to publicize your article in twitter and facebook through status update separately. It would be very easy and time saving if I could publicize my blog article in twitter and facebook as soon as the article is published.

But this is possible and I have implemented it as well. You just need a wordpress plugin and facebook application.

WordPress plugin required: <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twittrup/"title="Twitterup"  target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Twitterup

This plugin updates your twitter status with the latest post that you’ve made. It also has the option of including a link back to your post so people can easily click on it to view the post. The link provided in the tweet can be shorted via a service of your choice: tinyurl.com, is.gd, bit.ly or snurl.com

Facebook Application required: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=2231777543"title="Facebook application Twitter"  rel="nofollow"  target="_blank">Twitter

Updates your Facebook status with Twitter status and updates your Twitter status through the application.

The scenario:

1) You publish an article in your wordpress blog.

2) Your article is published as Twitter status through Twitterup wordpress plugin.

3) Your Facebook status is updated through the Twitter Facebook Application.

Finally, you combine Twitter, Facebook and WordPress blog at a time.

I just created a simple wp plugin named ‘Quick Adsense’. This plugin is in production phase. It is not full fledged yet.

This plugin creates a sidebar widget. After you activate this plugin, you can go to the Widgets section under Appearance. You will see a widget named ‘Quick Adsense’. Now, you can add this widget to your sidebar. You can edit the widget to add your adsense code. You may give title to the widget. You also have the option to hide or show the widget title.

Download Quick Adsense 1.0

The next modification/enhancement to this plugin will be:

- Adding multiple widgets

- Making settings page for the plugin where you can add adsense code for your post and pages.

More suggestions are welcomed !

Suppose you want to show your google adsense in the top-left side of your post. If you simply put your adsense code in the single post page (single.php) of wordpress then the text of your post will appear below the adsense.

To solve this problem, I used stylesheet property called ‘margin’. The example below is from single.php file of my wordpress theme. The adsense code is kept in between the paragraph tag.
It is kept after

and before

<?php the_content(); ?>

<?php the_content(''.__('Read More »', 'sandbox').''); ?>

Similarly, I created an about me page. I wanted to show my pic in the top-left position and to show the text by the side of the pic. For this I added style to my uploaded image while editing the page. I went to the HTML (not View) section in the edit/add page.

The style I added goes like this:

style="margin: 8px; float: left;"

More HTML source from my about page:

Suppose, you have many sub pages (child pages) of a single parent page. You want to show the list of all the child pages in the parent page.

You can show the list of pages and sub pages in the sidebar of your wordpress theme with the addition of in-built sidebar widget called ‘Pages’. This will show all your pages and sub pages nested inside parent pages.

I will be showing, how you can show the list of the sub pages in the parent page body (not in the sidebar but in the main body of the page).

Suppose, you have created a page called ‘Sports’. Under ‘Sports’, you have two sub pages called ‘Cricket’ and ‘Football’.

The process of creating a sub page/child page is as under:

1) First you create a page called Sports. You choose page parent as ‘Main Page’.

2) Then you create another page called ‘Cricket’. You choose page parent as ‘Sports’. Now, page cricket becomes the sub page of the page Sports.

Below is the code to show the list of sub pages in the parent page body. You have to put this code inside the the_post() section of the page.php template of your WordPress theme after the_content().

For WordPress 2.0.1 or older:

<?php
global $id;
wp_list_pages("title_li=&child_of=$id&show_date=modified
&date_format=$date_format"); ?>

For WordPress 2.0.1 or newer:

<?php
$children = wp_list_pages('title_li=&child_of='.$post->ID.'&echo=0');
if ($children) { ?>

<?php echo $children; ?>

<?php } ?>
